In small-school baseball, it’s a luxury to get a college-level player. But to have three on one team is truly a blessing and that’s what Winona Christian had this past season.
Those three seniors moving on to community college baseball are Choyce Diffey, Reed Roberts and Latham Hill.
Diffey signed with Meridian Community College to play baseball but was also a standout in football and basketball. In football, coach Junior Graham said Diffey had one of the best senior years he had ever been a part of. Diffey was the Class 3A Defensive Player of the year for the MAIS with 48 tackles and 12 interceptions. He had 954 yards receiving on 40 catches with 12 touchdowns and was an MAIS all-star pick. In basketball, Diffey averaged 15 points a game and eight rebounds a contest.
Latham Hill will be continuing his career at Northwest Mississippi Community College where he is likely to be a pitcher only. Hill is also a three-sport standout for the Stars and made the all-star game in football as well. Hill averaged 13.5 points a game and eight rebounds on the basketball court, Roberts has signed to play at Mississippi Delta Community College in baseball. Roberts was a MAIS all-star in both football and basketball for the Stars. Roberts averaged 14 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Stars. In football, Roberts started on both sides of the football for the Stars.
The Stars were 8-3 on the season before games were cancelled this season and veteran coach Shannon Self said he thought his team had a chance to contend for a state championship this season.
