Frank Miller has coached all over the state of Mississippi but after several years in the Mississippi public school system, the veteran coach needed a change of scenery.
The problem Miller was facing was he really liked the Winona area and wasn’t keen on moving again.
So when Carroll Academy advertised for a girls basketball coach, Miller applied for the job and recently accepted the position.
“I was looking to get out of the public school league and they had an opening and I applied,” Miller said. “There was nothing bad at Winona, I was just ready to retire from the public school system. I just wanted to finish my coaching days back in the private school system where I started my career. We really like Winona and wanted to stay in the area so the Carroll job allowed us to do that. I thought it was a good fit for everybody.”
Miller spent the last two years at Winona High School and was previously at Montgomery County before it was consolidated. He also coached at Charleston and Hatley in the MHSAA. He has coached in the private schools with stops at North Delta, Hillcrest Christian, Delta Academy, Jeff Davis Academy, Marshall Academy, Prentiss Christian and Yalobusha Academy.
“I have been all over the state,” Miller said. “I’m sort of a gypsy in that case. I like it in Winona and that was a big factor in me going to Carroll. I’ve always heard good things about the environment and the academics there.”
Miller replaces Sherry Fulton, who stepped down to retire.
“I’m looking forward to getting started whenever that is going to be,” Miller said. “Basketball is pretty much the same, wherever you coach at, just play hard and have a good attitude. I’m just excited to get started. I just don’t know whether that will be this summer or the fall. The headmaster told me we would have about 10 to 12 out for varsity but we didn’t really go over personnel. I won’t really know what I’ve got until I get a chance to see for myself.”
When it comes to coaching philosophy, Miller said it really depends on the personnel.
“At Montgomery County, we were man to man but we played a lot of zone last year at Winona,” Miller said. “I’m mostly a half court person because you are going to have to play in the half court to beat the good team. So you had better be good at defending the half court. We will do some zone presses but that won’t be our main goal going in.”
