Eddie Curry, the operator at the Carroll County Wastewater plant in Carrollton, told the Carroll County Board of Supervisors they had a situation that needed immediate attention, or they could face a hefty fine from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.
The board voted to gather estimates to have someone determine the problem at the wastewater treatment plant and advise them on what steps were needed to move forward.
Curry said that the county has a problem with aeration basin where the water from the aeration basin is coming into the clear water.
“So, it’ll either have to be drained out or replaced. I don’t know what’s going to have to take place,” Curry said. “At this point, it needs to be done in a hurry because we’re now at water that shouldn’t be going in the stream going out. So DEQ is not gone like that very much.”
Curry said he came before the board to see how they wanted to handle the situation. If they were going to declare an emergency to get it done, it needed to be done fast. If not, it could result in the county being hit with a fine from DEQ and Curry losing his license as a water operator.
Chancery Clerk Casey Carpenter asked if Curry knew of a company or anyone who handled problems like this one.
“The problem is getting them to try and go to work now, that’s the problem,” Shane Correro said.
“Well, we have two certified plumbers around the table,” Board President Jim Neill said, referring to Supervisors Claude Fluker and Dill Tucker. “I don’t know much about plumbing, but they can tell you.”
Fluker said he spoke with Gaylan Shumaker, the public works superintendent for the towns of North Carrollton and Carrollton.
“He says he’s qualified for the job, I don’t know,” he said.
Curry asked what Shumaker was going to do with the waste that was in the aerator.
“We’ll have to get him over there to take a look at it, and we’ll have to figure all that out once we get over there,” Fluker said.
“We’ll get it done,” Supervisor Jim Neill said.
Also, the board went into executive session about a personnel matter concerning the Northern District Justice Court office. After the board re-entered the meeting, Board Attorney Kevin Horan said the board took no action on the matter.
