A Kilmichael man is in the custody of United States Marshals following a routine traffic stop in Winona.
Winona police arrested Marcus D. Brown, 37, at about 9:20 p.m. on Dec. 20 and charged him with no tag, suspended driver’s license and no proof of liability insurance, according to Police Chief Roshaun Daniels.
“During the stop, Brown gave consent to search his vehicle in which an abundant amount of Social Security cards, State issued IDs, birth certificates, credit cards and other personal identifying and financial documents of other people were found,” stated Daniels.
A joint investigation between the Winona Police Department and the United States Secret Service revealed Brown had been involved in an extensive identification theft operation, Daniels said.
“The investigation also indicated that Brown had used the identity of a man in Florida to buy the car that he was stopped in,” said Daniels.
U.S. Marshals are holding Brown, who now faces up to 45 counts of aggravated identity theft in Federal Court, Daniels stated.
