Austin Huggins got to play one last baseball game representing Winona Christian.
He was selected to play in the MAIS Class A-AA All-star baseball game. Huggins was on the White team that ended up losing 16-10 in a nine-inning contest.
Huggins, a Meridian Community College signee, got the start on the mound and pitched the first inning as nine different pitchers threw at least one inning.
“He got the start and didn’t pitch bad at all,” Winona Christian coach Shannon Self said. “They committed four errors behind him but he only gave up one hit and one unearned run, which isn’t bad when you commit four errors. They were kind of shaky the second and third innings but settled down after that.”
Huggins also played at third and made several putouts, Self said.
Self said the all-star game was the culmination of a brilliant career for Huggins.
“He has had as good a career as anyone that has ever played at Winona Christian,” Self said. “He will be a two-time all-state selection and was conference MVP two years in a row. He won three district titles and one state championship. He was all-conference for four years. And one of the more impressive things in my opinion is he had a 20-1 conference record. That’s hard to beat.”
