Having a working smoke detector is a necessity, but for some that necessity is often put off for financial reasons. However, a local group in Winona are helping people to have new smoke detectors installed in their homes.
Blessings for all Empowered by Faith will install smoke detectors from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday. The group, organized by Calbrina Woods, decided to install detectors free of charge after a fatal fire in Winona last year. Woods said in an earlier interview, she learned the homeowner did not have a smoke detector, and she wanted to make sure that everyone has one.
She said in the interview, she researched organizations she could partner with and found this was something that the American Red Cross does. Woods said the smoke detectors are good for 10 years.
In June, volunteers and members of several non-profit organizations went door-to-door installing smoke detectors. Woods said her goal is to install 400 smoke detectors. They were first installed on the west side of Winona.
Saturday will be the second installment, and members of Blessings for All, Duck Hill New Millennium Club, Spring Hill Lodge No. 388 and Friendship Court No. 28 will go door to door installing smoke detectors and giving tips on how to stay safe during a fire. They will be working on the east side of Winona Saturday.
