Winona easily won the boys and girls 2-2A track meet last week. The boys finished with 161 points to 89 for runner-up Calhoun City. They were followed by Leflore County with 87 points, Eupora with 24 and East Webster with 7.
In the girls meet, Winona had 167 points. Calhoun City was second with 123 points, followed by East Webster with 34, Leflore County with 19.5 and Eupora with half a point.
Winona coach Chris McRae was pleased with the results, but added “It's just the first step to get to the state meet. We still have a lot of work.”
Winona won 10 girls events and eight in the boys.
Malcolm Gholston was a double winner for the Winona boys in the 400, with a time of 53.82 and the high jump (5-6). He also finished third in the 200 in 24.10.
Other boys winners: Jaylyn Sanders, long jump, 19-6; Andarious Coffey, triple jump, 39-5; Isaac Leech, pole vault, 10-0; Jalen Phillips, discus, 131-10; 400 relay, 44.86; and 800 relay, 1:34.59.
Sanders also finished second in the triple jump (36-4) and Phillips was third in the shot put (38-9½).
Krystle Hughes was a triple winner in the girls meet, taking first in the 100 (12.39), 200 (26.08) and long jump (17-8½). She was second in the high jump (4-6). Tyra Weathersby won two events, the 400 (1:07.89) and triple jump (33-8½ ), took second in the long jump (17-5½ ) and third in the 200 (28.37). Her sister Natori Weathersby, the defending 2A state champion in the discus, won that event with a throw of 103 feet, half an inch and was second in the shot put (26-5).
Other girls winners for Winona: Jayla Campbell, 100 hurdles, 20.60; Lataria Ellis, high jump (4-6); Aasjahla Garron, pole vault, 5-0, Latericka Finchis, shot put, 27-2½. Ellis also finished third in the 100 hurdles (21.03) and 300 hurdles (1:10.3), Garron was third in the 100 (13.65) and fourth in the long jump at (15-8) and Finchis took second in the discus (79-2).
The top four in each event qualified for the region meet to be held Friday at the Winona track, along with qualifiers from District 1. That will be followed by the North State meet, then the state meet Other Winona boys who qualified: Ahmad Robinson, 200, second, and 100, third; Tracy Chandler, 400, second; Sam Matriasciano, 800, second, and 1600, fourth; Carson Holly, 1600, third, and 800, fourth; Adavion Hargrove, 300 hurdles, third, and 110 hurdles, fourth; Andarious Coffey, 300 hurdles, fourth; Antonio Kinnell, high jump, second; Tavares Townsend, long jump, second, and triple jump fourth; Derrick Blaylock, pole vault, second; Dalton Murphy, pole vault, third; Dorian Curry, discus, third; Quentin McCorkley, shot put, fourth; 1600 relay, second; and 3200 relay, second.
Other girls qualifiers: Quataysha Burt, 400, fourth; Cassie Thomas, 800, fourth; Mary Hope Gammell, 1600, third; Tyonna Ford, triple jump, second; Tamira Hamilton, discus, third; 400 relay, second, 800 relay, third; 1600 relay, second; and 3200 relay, second.
