Members of the Winona Montgomery Consolidated School District Board are working diligently to select a new superintendent for the district.
The Board contracted with the Mississippi School Boards Association (MSBA) to assist in the search for the new superintendent, according to a statement released by Judy Collins, WMCSD administrative assistant.
MSBA prepared a job announcement advertising the vacancy of the position and outlining district qualifications for superintendent, which were set by WMCSD Board members, and posted the announcement online at the MSBA website with the application on April 3, 2023, the release stated.
Denotris Jackson, executive director of MSBA, sent an email to more than 5,000 people on MSBA’s mailing list announcing the search and requesting assistance in publicizing the vacancy.
Jackson also contacted potential applicants.
“The vacancy announcement was sent to the National Superintendent Search Association, which posted it on their website. Responses were made to those who had been recommended or who had expressed an interest,” the release stated.
All completed applications which were submitted on or before the May 1 deadline were accepted and processed.
“There were 13 applicants for the superintendent position. Mrs. Denotris Jackson and Dr. Tommye Henderson met with the Board to review the applications on May 16, 2023. Among the applicants are two superintendents, one assistant superintendent, four directors, four principals, one instructional coach, and one professional development specialist. Nine of the applicants have a doctorate degree. Eight of the applicants are male, and five of the applicants are female. Twelve of the applicants are from Mississippi,” the release stated. “One applicant is from Michigan.”
Each application was reviewed and evaluated according to the criteria established by the Winona Montgomery Consolidated School District Board members.
A determination was made as to whether each applicant met the qualifications to be a superintendent in Mississippi according to the Mississippi Code of 1972, which went into effect on July 1, 2017, or met the Mississippi Department of Education Alternative Qualifications for Prospective District Superintendents of Education, according to the release.
“Applicants who had not previously been interviewed by the MSBA Search Team were interviewed,” stated the release. “Telephone calls and personal contacts were made to gain additional information about each applicant.”
The Board members received the report and all application materials. Board members will use the report and materials to determine the next course of action.
