The Carroll County Board of Supervisors held an emergency meeting at 10 a.m. in the courthouse in Vaiden Thursday morning to discuss the closure of County Road 53 in Beat 4.
Supervisor Claude Fluker said due to the Easter Sunday storm, he has to replace three culverts. Fluker said Leflore County has agreed to come and help him with the work of installing the culverts, and once Leflore County has completed their work, Tim Armstrong will complete the rest of the work.
Fluker said the money to pay for the culverts came out of the bridge fund, and it was declared an emergency. The board approved for the Leflore County to come and assist Fluker with the work and for Armstrong to come and complete the work.
Monday morning, Carroll County Emergency Management and Civil Defense Director Ken Strachan said he, Beat 4 Supervisor Claude Fluker, and Mississippi Emergency Management Area Coordinator Bret Miller visited the site.
“After visiting the site we entered the damage on County Road 53 in crisis track, that is our reporting system, the estimated amount is $130,000 in efforts to recover funds from FEMA,” Strachan said.
Strachan said the road remains closed and Carroll County put in place a record of the damage ahead of there being a Federal declaration for the 2020 flooding. He said federal inspectors met with he and March in efforts to recover funds, since then there has been continuous flooding.
He also gave an update on the Easter storms that hit Carroll County where one person died when a tree fell onto her home.
“On Sunday there were several calls that came into the Carroll County Emergency Operations Center of trees down following high winds. We had been working on the cleanup from the storm Easter Sunday and began preparing for a significant weather event for this past Sunday, that could have been a lot worse.” said Carroll County Emergency Management/ Civil Defense Director Ken Strachan.
Strachan said there were reports Sunday of trees down on County Road 94 in the area of County Road 327, County Road 131, Highway 35 near Carrollton, County Road 130, and County Road 77.
“Road crews worked to remove the trees and make the roads passable. There were also reports of tree damages to power lines and a meter base coming down from a house as a result of a tree blown down.” Strachan said.
He said power was restored in Carroll County last week from the Easter storms and this past Monday, he participated in a conference call with Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley, Grenada County officials and Entergy.
“It is good to review the last storm and prepare for the next, communication with what’s going on at the local level is essential and the conference call was very informative in planning ahead,” Strachan said.
