On Thursday, May 23, Morrison Heights Baptist Church Homeschool Co-Op from Clinton traveled to Carrollton to visit Cotesworth, the home of the U.S. Senator J.Z. George, and to tour the town of Carrollton. The trip was spurred by one father’s desire to see Cotesworth after having read the biography of J.Z. George. An interested mother, Mandy Ivy, inquired with Mayor Pam Lee about organizing a visit, to which Mayor Lee was more than willing to support. The Co-Op then organized a trip to Carrollton, where they would learn about the town’s rich history. Ahead of their visit, Group Leader Ivy received a lesson plan for Cotesworth and the history of Carrollton with activity sheets for the kids. The tour throughout Carrollton was led by Snooky and Pam Lee. While visiting, the Co-Op toured the Merrill Museum, going on a scavenger hunt through the exhibits to learn more about Carroll County. Next, they toured the Carrollton Baptist Church where Senator George and his family were active members. In addition to these locations, the group also visited Carrollton Town Hall and JJ Gee’s Mercantile. The tour wrapped up at North Carrollton’s famous ice cream shop, Grumpy’s Ice House, for a sweet treat.
Here, at the end of the tour, the families and children posed for pictures with owner Allen Dunn.
When asked about the experience, Mayor Lee stated, “They were a great group of kids. They were very interested in learning about Carrollton. I was delighted to be a part of that, and I would love to do it for other school groups.”
In addition, Allen Dunn extended his gratitude for the visit, stating “It’s great to have out-of-town people coming in and visiting my place. It really helps out small businesses like mine.”
