With the start of the New Year, Carroll County Board of Supervisors kicked off its first meeting of the year by rehiring all county employees and choosing a new president and vice-president.
Following a prayer by Rev. George Blake, pastor of Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church, the board voted to keep Beat 5 Supervisor Rickie Corley as board president and Beat 4 Supervisor Claude Fluker as board vice president.
Corley said he and Fluker have worked well together, as well as the entire board, and he thanked them for choosing him, as well did Fluker.
“We don’t always agree, but we don’t have any serious issues either,” Corley said.
“I hope that we can continue that as a board,” Fluker said.
The board also re-appointed Kevin Horan as board attorney and Chancery Clerk Sugar Mullins as the Comptroller, Andy Vining as the Fire Coordinator, Sherry Blaylock as the purchasing clerk, Rogan Jackson as the receiving clerk, and Circuit Clerk Durward Stanton as the Inventory Control Clerk. They voted to retain all five supervisors on the North Central Planning and Development District Board of Trustees.
In other county business, the board went into executive session with Les Smith and Mark Bailey of Performance Health to discuss some insurance claims that had been filed by employees. Board attorney Kevin Horan said to discuss the matter in open session would be detrimental to the employee and a HIPPA violation.
After the executive session, Smith told those in the audience that the county’s insurance rate had increase by 52 percent. However, he was able to get it lowered to 17 percent by placing Carroll County in a coalition of several counties that also span to include Arkansas.
The board also:
• Approved to publish in The Conservative seized stolen property that will be auctioned off if the owners do not come forward. Sheriff Clint Walker said they’ve been unable to locate the owners of the property after it was seized.
• Approved changes to the 2018 tax roll
• Approved to finish an unfinished room at the Carroll County School District Special Services Office. Superintendent Billy Joe Ferguson said it would cost $1,500 to finish the room. He said work was started, but it was never completed.
• Approved reimbursement for Coroner Mark Stiles to attend the Mississippi Coroner’s Association Winter Conference in Jackson.
• Approved bonds for Shonna McGehee, Justice Court Clerk; Banks Tucker, Zachary Redditt, Mark Mulconrey and Tyler Murphy, deputy sheriffs; Nancy Jackson, deputy sanitation clerk; Dr. Fletcher B. Harges, principal; Aubrey T. Reynolds, school manager.
• Approved to employee all current employees at their present salary until further notice.
• Approved board order approving fees for Sugar Mullins, Chancery Clerk for one year
