A strong defensive effort enabled the Winona girls basketball team to defeat Bruce 25-12 last week.
“Our defense was solid. We played a man defense the whole night,” said coach Veronica Helms of her Lady Tigers. Winona trailed 6-5 after the first quarter, took a 13-8 lead by outscoring Bruce 8-2 in the second quarter and held the Lady Trojans to six points the final three periods.
“It wasn't an outstanding offensive night,” Helms said. “We missed a lot of shots. We should have won by a lot more, but we missed some shots from under the basket. It was really rough. The refs did not call a lot of fouls.”
Tommesha Brown was the leading scorer with nine points. MyCala Helms had six.
After the Christmas break, the Lady Tigers (6-6) and Tigers will be back on the hard wood Jan 9 to open play in Region 2-2A against Leflore County.

The Winona boys basketball team was defeated by Bruce 74-34 in the Tigers' final game of 2017. Sean Merritt was the team's leading scorer with 12 points.
“We just didn't play well,” said coach Presley Coleman “We had 31 turnovers and 12 of those came in the first quarter. We have to do a better job of starting out games. We are digging ourselves big holes in the first quarter and having to play catch up the rest of the game.”
“We are going to use Christmas break to shore up some of our issues right now so we can be prepared for division play,” Coleman said.
