The Lady Tigers of Winona High School used an impressive second quarter to take a solid 51-36 win over Charleston last week.
“Charleston is big and strong, but we played real well against them,” said coach Veronica Helms. “We played really good defense. We only allowed three points in the second quarter.”
The Lady Tigers outscored Charleston 14-3 in the second quarter for a 28-16 halftime lead.
“We shot free throws better than we had been shooting free throws, and I was excited about that,” Helms said.
Tyra Weathersby led three Lady Tigers in double figures with 16 points. Tommesha Brown and Airiyonna Topps each had 11., In another game played last week Calhoun City led Winona 13-7 after one quarter and kept building on the lead on the way to a 65-31 win over the Lady Tigers. “We just didn't play very well,” Helms said. “We missed a bunch of shots under the basket. We didn't shoot well at all.”
Brown had 13 points and MyCala Helms 11.
The Lady Tigers are 6-7 with a roster than includes only one senior.
Winona plays at Bruce Friday, then will be off until after the first of the year.
Tigers
The Winona boys basketball team dropped games against Calhoun City 85-63 and Charleston 54-21. Coach Presley Coleman said his team had a good start against Calhoun City, but played poorly against Charleston.
“We actually led Calhoun City 18-16 after the first quarter,” he said. “It was probably our best first quarter of the year. It's a tough place to play. Not many teams go there and have a lead after the first quarter.”
Winona turnovers in the second and third quarters allowed Calhoun City to pull away. “Against a team like Calhoun City, you can't turn the ball over. They convert turnovers into easy baskets.”
Calhoun City outscored Winona 56-28 during the second and third quarters. “We got away from what was working,” Coleman said.
Sophomore Chris Olton had a strong game for Winona with 20 points and six rebounds. Freshman Robert McMath scored 14 points and sophomore Mitch Stewart had 13.
The Tigers managed only eight points in the first half against Charleston. “It was a bad game all around,” Coleman said. “We didn't compete. We played with zero energy. The effort and intensity wasn't there.”
Sean Merritt was the Tigers' leading scorer with six points. Winona played both games without leading scorer JaTyler Moore, out with a toe fracture.
