The J.Z. George basketball teams didn’t have any games scheduled for the week before Christmas, and both coaches had plans of getting in some extra practice time.
“We are going to be working on fundamentals and adding to our offense,” boys coach Jonathan Childs said. “This will be a time for us to correct mistakes we keep making. It’s the little things that will beat you. We have a lot to work on and we have our region schedule coming up.”
The Jaguars will be playing in the East Webster tournament Thursday when they take on Starkville Academy. The J.Z. George boys currently stand at 5-8. The boys play at 11:15 a.m. Thursday.
J.Z. George plays in the tough Region 3-3A along with Charleston, Amanda Elzy, Humphrey County, Ruleville Central and Yazoo County. After they visit Ridgeland on Tuesday, Jan. 2, the Jaguars take on Amanda Elzy the following Friday.
The Jaguar teams are both 0-1 in the region, having both lost to Humphreys County earlier this month.
Lady Jaguars
The Amanda Elzy girls will be a tough challenge, having made it to the finals of the Girls State Class 3A tournament back last March.
Injuries have been a problem for Coach Kenisha Henry’s team as they lost two starters in the first game of the season. The Lady Jaguars were down to five players earlier this month but have added a couple to the roster.
“We are going to be practicing over the Christmas holidays,” Coach Henry said. “We need to work on everything. We will be going back to the basics and try to get ready for our region schedule.”
The Lady Jags face SA at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the East Webster Tournament.
Other schools participating in the event are Choctaw County, Baldwyn, Hebron Christian, Winston Academy, Louisville, Oak Hill and host East Webster.
