Winona Christian held its Veterans Day celebration 8:30 a.m. Thursday, November 8 in the school’s gym. The celebration was opened with the presenting of the colors by a Joint Color Guard.
After the singing of the National Anthem and the invocation, Senior Jacey Eldridge sang “God Bless America” with Sara Burden White as her pianist. Keynote speaker Bernard Evans was introduced by Command Sergeant Johnny Marlow.
Evans spoke about the importance of having pride in your country and how it was for him fighting in the Vietnam War. Marlow followed by telling students they are the future and the traditions of patriotism and wanting to fight for your country is in their hands.
“We’re too old to fight now,” he said of the many veterans in attendance. “It’s your time now. You have to step up to the plate.”
After Evans spoke, the colors were retired, and White gave the benediction and the school provided a light breakfast after service.
Before adjourning, Marlow told the students if they wanted to meet a real hero to shake the hands of the veterans who have served their country and some who are still serving their country.
For Cade and Colby Marlow, it’s their first Veterans Day in uniform. Even though they’re not veterans, to be able to put on the uniform put a smile on the twins’ faces. The two recently enlisted in the Army, following the footsteps of their grandfather and spent their summer training before returning home in August in time for school.
