Elyse Mathis has been helping youth in Carroll County get back on their feet and create a new path since 2017. Mathis works with the North Central Planning and Development District as a workforce training counselor.
Mathis is a native of Winona and a 2005 graduate of Winona High School and received her degree from Middle Georgia Technical College. She has a daughter Khylis Mathis. She said she loves working in Carroll County and helping to bring more students into the program.
Carroll County is a part of the SELECT program. The program serves youth 18 to 24 years olds who live in either Carroll, Holmes or Leflore Counties. The students have to be out of school and students who enroll in the program are given an opportunity to learn job skills that will carry them throughout their lives.
Mathis said her favorite part of the program is to see how students pick up on what’s taught and how they use it when they enter the workforce.
She said right now she works with several businesses in Carroll County. Mathis said because Carroll County is small, she can only take 10 students at a time. Once they’ve completed the program, she said they track the student’s success for a year.
Mathis said counseling is also available for students who want to look at their short-term and long-term goals and students who may want to go to college or through technical training after completing the course.
Her office is located in the Vaiden’s town hall and she’s open to help anyone in need. If anyone wants any information, they can contact Mathis at 662-516-2852.
