Patrick Roy, a 17-year-old junior from J.Z. George High School, has always had a fondness for art. It’s in his blood. He said his dad Larry Roy was once a tattoo artist and is also a master carpenter. His cousin Haley Carroll owns a tattoo shop in Winona.
For him, art in some form has always been a part of his life.
His art is frequently on display at J.Z. George High, and recently, many in the Delta region realized that Roy was an amazing artist too when he took home the award for the overall emerging young artist.
He said he’s entered a few art contest that his teacher, Susanna Harris, posted other contests as well on the bulletin board.
“She encourages me to enter in to contest and I do,” he said.
Roy said he almost missed the announcement for his award.
“They told us that there would be a break, and I walked across the street to the store,” he said.
Roy said the awards ceremony began earlier than announced, and as he was walking back in, he heard the announcement for his award.
“It kind of shocked me,” he said.
Roy said he also does art around J.Z. George.
“I do a lot of the work for the theatre class,” he said.
Recently, Roy painted a replica of the iconic Soul Train logo for a Black History production.
He said he’s also working on a piece that will go on a teacher’s coffee table. Along with art, Roy can also work with wood.
Roy said once he graduates, he wants to go to school to become a tattoo artist and open his own shop.
