If you’re looking for a way to de-stress during the work week, life is beating you down, and you need a way to breathe, the Winona-Montgomery Library has a solution for you – its Adult Coloring class. Yes, I said an adult coloring class.
The class meets on Thursdays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30. It’s a way to socialize, have a light snack and to relax, and let go of all your worries. And you don’t have to bring anything with you, just yourself and a friend if you want.
As research for this story, I went to the class to take pictures and colored in the process – also because Wendy Rushing, the librarian, insisted I join the group.
“Oh, you can color,” she said and handed me a paper.
One lady brought her own colors and a book. If you have your own and are more comfortable with it, you can bring it, but it doesn’t matter.
It was relaxing. It brings back memories of nostalgia. I’m a creative person, which is why I’m a journalist, and you have to come up with ways that your reader understand the information you’re presenting.
And you have to do it in a way that they want to read it. It’s not as easy as it seem. So, I sat down to color, trying to be careful to stay within the lines.
As we went around the room, you learned about what the group of ladies did in their former life. Greeting the next lady as they entered the room. They welcomed me as Librarian Wendy Rushing passed around sheets to color.
Since it was Valentine’s Day, the sheets were Bible verses that dealt with love. I chose one of my favorite verses “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding.” The picture had flowers and hearts around it. I picked up a pink marker and went to work.
I met a lady named Annie who pointed out my left-handedness. We chatted for a while.
When I stood to take pictures, they made sure to all have their heads down coloring. They all agreed they were not picture ready. They just wanted to color.
The women caught with each other, asking about kids, talked about how bad the flu is and kind of predicted the bad weather we’re seeing now.
I had to leave early because I had to take pictures in Vaiden, but I’ll be back. It was worth it.
