EUNICE, La. — The No. 7 Pearl River softball team hit the road Sunday for a top-15 showdown with No. 13 LSU Eunice. The Wildcats dropped a hard-fought opener, 3-2 in extra innings, before responding with an emphatic 8-4 win in the nightcap to earn the split. "This is the first time we've been on the road and had to play someone at their house," head coach Christie Meeks said. "It was a great learning experience against a really good team fighting on its home field, and I'm proud of how we responded after an emotional game."

It was only fitting that a series that felt more like a Super-Regional in June than an opening weekend in February ended in chaos. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and the crowd at Pete Taylor Park on its feet, Matthew Russo never saw a strike. UC Santa Barbara reliever Nic Peterson missed four times, and Russo raised his arms as Seth Smith touched home plate, giving Southern Miss a 6-5 walk-off victory to clinch a dramatic opening weekend series against UCSB.

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The No. 2 Pearl River baseball team survived a late No. 19 Gulf Coast State surge on Saturday at Dub Herring Park, shutting the door to secure an 8-7 victory and a series victory. “We battled all weekend and they’re (Gulf Coast State) really, really good,” PRCC head coach said. “They’re as physical of an offense as we’ve seen. The bottom line is we won the series, and that was the goal coming into the weekend. Any time you take two out of three against a team like that, it’s a really good weekend.”

Southern Miss evened its weekend series with UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park, using a late two-run home run from Joey Urban and five scoreless innings from its bullpen to secure an 8-6 victory. “I thought our guys competed hard,” Southern Miss head coach Christian Ostrander said. “Really good arm on the mound again. We knew it was going to be a fight coming into it. They got the lead and it didn’t look good, but our guys kept competing and we were able to put some things together.”

Jackson Flora was everything he was advertised to be in his 2026 debut. He pitched six innings, allowing just three hits with no runs and no walks. “Got to give credit where credit is due,” Southern Miss head coach Christian Ostrander said. “Their guy pitched really well, as advertised. That’s a really good arm. We kept it close for the most part until that two-run home run there in the ninth inning.”

Senate Education Committee sends limited student transfer program, student felony arrest bills to floor

Both bills are works in progress as lawmakers continue to move legislation out of committees for consideration. The Mississippi Senate Education Committee passed two bills on Monday that could have far reaching implications. One measure would create a small student transfer program for students in the lowest ranking school districts while a separate bill would mandate school districts receive notification within 24 hours of a student’s felony arrest.
