Mrs. Amber Austin’s Ed Rising organization participated in its state conference at the University of Southern Mississippi February 2-4. The following students were honored to represent their school in the following competitive events: Kevi Killough, seventh place - Interactive Bulletin Board; Chrislyn Willis, third place, Job Interview; Jessiyah Leflore, Alyssa Harris and Ebony Robinson, fifth, Public Service Announcement-Teacher Recruitment. These students had a wonderful experience and represented their school well.

This cold weather makes me melancholy as I sit and ponder yesteryears. It makes me remember the days of cold winter that I spent with my grandmother and grandaddy in Montgomery County.
You hear people talk about living in the country, well this was LIVING in the country. The property sat right on the Montgomery County line and the Attala County line. The old barn, housing the old Guernsey milk cow, sat straddling the two county lines.

What a week!
You may be still waiting for electricity or water; I hope both are restored soon and you can begin to get things back to normal.
We had water the entire time of the ice storm, but lost electricity. Thank goodness for our fireplace and the wood that Gary and Andrew had piled up. Thank goodness for help getting it split.
Gary had a gas ring and big pot he used for boiling hot water in his chicken processing. The propane ring turned into a cooker for us. Drew came up with some good meals on it although it was hard to regulate on a low temperature.

Winona Christian School senior Chloe Word represented Holmes County 4-H with distinction at the Dixie National Livestock Show, competing among top exhibitors from across the state.
Word earned multiple placements in the highly competitive swine shows, including sixth-place Chester gilt, fifth-place Chester gilt, fourth-place Chester barrow (twice), and fifth-place Light Cross. In addition to her livestock success, she was recognized for her skill and professionalism in the ring, earning eighth overall showmanship in the 17–18 age division.

(JACKSON, MISS) – The Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS) announces that the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has approved mass replacement benefits for CURRENT Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) households in the 15 hardest-hit counties. A separate waiver extending the period to request replacement benefits has already been granted until February 23, 2026, for residents in the additional 28 counties impacted by Winter Storm Fern.

The sky must have fallen. I never thought it could happen. But it did. I actually agreed with most of what liberal Robert Wise wrote in the NSS on January 30. He criticized Trump for his statements on taking over Greenland. Trump antagonized the Danes {owners of Greenland) and also NATO with his brash approach. If he had taken a softer approach, he would have gained friends instead of generating bad feelings. They would have been grateful to him and to the USA for setting up a "golden dome" defense for them (and also for us) at the northernmost extremity of their Greenland island.

The town of North Carrollton welcomed Dusti Youngblood Kelly, FNP-C, at the clinic located at 502 George St., on Wednesday.
The clinic, which opened Feb. 11, will operate Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. An open house was held on Saturday, Feb 7.
"We appreciate them being here to provide healthcare needs for this area. This has always been a great location here in town, and we welcome Dusti and her staff," Mayor Ken Strachan said.

One of the strange things about mass media is that you deal in masses of people. Every week we have multiple obituaries in our newspapers. Each of the deceased leaves behind a wake in the water of humanity, touching other lives in innumerable and profound ways.
Our God creates so many people and yet each person is unique and precious. It is mind boggling, but that’s simply the way it is. Our job at the newspaper is to chronicle their passing. We cannot begin to fully express the magnitude of their journey.

One measure would extend the validity of medical cannabis cards while another would create the “Right to Try Medical Cannabis Act.”
Two bills related to Mississippi’s medical cannabis program passed in the House of Representatives this week.
One bill extends the timeframe for a patient’s follow-up visit to keep their medical cannabis card valid, while a second bill creates a system where patients suffering from debilitating or terminal conditions not already on the state’s list of approved conditions can petition to try medical cannabis.

The Winona High School girls soccer team advanced to the second round of the Class I state tournament with an 8-1 win over Pelahatchie High School Thursday at Tiger Stadium.
The Lady Tigers (11-4) will take on Vardaman High School at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the second round. The winner moves on to play the winner of the Booneville-St. Andrew’s contest on Saturday in the third round.

The J.Z. George basketball teams will head straight to the Region 3-2A Tournament next week after all three of its remaining district games have been canceled due to last week’s winter weather. The Lady Jags and Jaguars had games against Charleston High School, Northside High School and M.S. Palmer called off.
The Region 3 Tournament is slated to start Tuesday at J.Z. George High School.
The Lady Jaguars are 12-9 overall and end region play at 2-3. The Jaguars are 10-12 and 1-4.

In a sure sign that spring is not far behind, the first purple martins of the year have been spotted in Mississippi.
The birds were seen on Jan. 31 in Gautier, Mississippi, by a purple martin enthusiast – one of many throughout the eastern and central United States who track and report on the birds’ annual migration on behalf of the Purple Martin Conservation Association (PMCA). The migration of these unique birds can be reported and tracked through a community science project called the Scout-Arrival Study.
