Neither of the bills dealt with education freedom. The House Education Chairman said he expected Wednesday’s committee meeting to be the last for this session but “that’s subject to change.”

Jackson Mayor John Horhn has selected Dr. RaShall Brackney to be the new police chief of Jackson.
Most of Brackney’s career, 30 years, was in the Pittsburgh Police Bureau. She later served as chief of campus police at George Washington University and, most recently, police chief in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Brackney takes over from interim chief Tyree Jones, also serving as Hinds County Sheriff. This week she visited Jackson where she spoke to various groups and was shown around town by Mayor Horhn.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, the prominent civil rights activist and protégé of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was no stranger to Leflore County as he visited the Delta several times.
Jackson died at his home in Chicago Tuesday. He was 84.

Little by little, the impact of the 2026 ice storm is easing. As I write this, most of Carrollton has electricity. And most of Carrollton has limbs that need disposing of. The responsibility of disposing of limbs and other tree debris from individual properties has always been the responsibility of the property owners. At a Washington dinner party, a socialite sidled up to President Calvin Coolidge with a mischievous smile. “Mr. President,” she said, “I’ve made a bet that I can get you to say more than three words.”

Both bills are works in progress as lawmakers continue to move legislation out of committees for consideration.
The Mississippi Senate Education Committee passed two bills on Monday that could have far reaching implications.
One measure would create a small student transfer program for students in the lowest ranking school districts while a separate bill would mandate school districts receive notification within 24 hours of a student’s felony arrest.

The Carroll Academy girls and boys basketball teams were ousted from the MAIS North 2A Tournament by Benton Academy last Tuesday night.
The Lady Rebels dropped a 53-45 decision to the Lady Raiders to finish the season with an 11-6 record. Benton went in front 14-12 after the first frame and pulled away with an 18-8 run in the second to lead 32-20 at the half. Benton led 39-28 after the third quarter. Carroll held a 17-14 advantage in the final eight minutes.

Winona High School's Kaylen Whitfield scored two goals in the Lady Tigers 8-1 win over Pelahatchie High School in the first round of the MHSAA Class I state playoffs last Thursday at Tiger Stadium. The Lady Tigers played Vardaman High School in the second round Tuesday night.
The Winona High School girls soccer season came to a halt as Vardaman High School claimed a 2-1 win in overtime in the second round of the MHSAA Class I state playoffs Tuesday at Tiger Stadium.
Kaylen Whitfield scored Winona’s lone goal. The Lady Tigers end their season with an 11-5 overall record.
The Lady Tigers advanced to the second round with an 8-1 win over Pelahatchie High School last Thursday at Tiger Stadium.
