Walking through a parking lot at Northeast Mississippi Community College on a November afternoon, Nickeda Shelton was eager to get to her job as one of the school’s student counselors.
She loves working at the Booneville campus, enough so that she drives around 60 miles round trip every day from her home in Tupelo. It was an exciting change after roughly two decades of work in a K-12 setting.

It was a terrible shooting night for Southern Miss on Thursday. Not to mention losing their leading scorer, the Golden Eagles shot just 31% from the floor. It spent much of Thursday’s contest just trying to find any way to score the basketball and holding off upset minded Louisiana.
Still, the Golden Eagles found a way.
Relying on defense, rebounding and a late free-throw surge, Southern Miss held off the Cajuns for a 62-54 win at Reed Green Coliseum, opening Sun Belt Conference play with a gritty victory.

It was a game of runs, and the Lady Eagles had the final say with a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from South Alabama and open Sun Belt Conference play with a 84-65 win.
“To start 1-0 in conference play is what matters,” Southern Miss coach Missy Bilderback said. “This is what the nonconference is for — to get us ready for Sun Belt play. I thought South Alabama has a great team.”
The Lady Eagles (8-4, 1-0 Sun Belt) were fueled by a big night from Jakayla Johnson, who scored 20 points while shooting 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Douglas Holtz-Eakin probably isn’t sitting at the popular table of today’s Washington Republicans because he worked for President George W. Bush two decades ago.
In 2001-02 he was the chief economist of Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers, and from 2003-05 he was director of the Congressional Budget Office. He also was the chief economic policy adviser for Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, which further excludes him from influence with President Trump’s people.

Every year when I was young, my family had a tradition we dubbed, “The Bake-a-Thon.” My great-grandmother would decorate her entire house to put the Griswolds to shame (it really is a wonder it didn’t create a city-wide power outage), my grandmother would come to town from Little Rock, my great-aunt would come in from Dallas and my mother and I would all stay in the house all weekend long making every homemade Christmas treat you could imagine.

The Mississippi Court of Appeals has ordered a new murder trial for Tameshia Shelton, a 47-year-old mother of four who has long insisted on her innocence.
Judges vacated her conviction and ordered the new trial. The state attorney general’s office has not said whether it plans to appeal the ruling to the Mississippi Supreme Court.

Hattiesburg Police Department, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and concerned citizens gathered at the scene following Friday afternoon’s accident.
The Christmas tree in the roundabout on Hardy Street and Adeline was struck Friday afternoon for the second time since the tree’s first appearance in 2023. Thankfully, the Texas driver suffered no injuries, and the Christmas tree’s damage was limited to the bottom tiers.
Hattiesburg Police Department closed all roads leading to the roundabout to extract the vehicle and for repairs to be made to the tree. Hattiesburg’s Parks and Recreation Department was able to lift the tree, remove the damaged tiers and set the tree back down, keeping the Hub City tradition intact.

Both public hearings on the agenda for Monday’s work session of the Hattiesburg City Council were tabled until after the new year after discussions between the applicants for the hearings and their respective council representatives. Additionally, Code Enforcement moved to dismiss the resolutions of condemnation against Mount Carmel Ministries following the receipt of documentation confirming the repairs made to ensure the stability of the steeple.

For decades, leisurely drives through western Madison County would take you through rolling hills rich in farmland, pastures, and timber. Row crops could be found growing in the mellow, brown loam soils along rivers and creek bottoms. Prime cattle would be grazing in knee-deep Bermuda grass, loafing under mammoth oaks. During spring, blooming Dogwoods would explode resembling that of a new-fallen snow through the moist soil basins. During winter, Possumhaw would line the fencerows revealing their vibrant red berries offering food and cover for cardinals, cedar waxwings, and quail.
