The Winona track team opened the 2020 season at the Southaven Relay last Saturday.
“The main thing was the effort,” said Coach Chris McRae. “I just wanted to see them go out and compete. It was cold, really cold. At least the sun was shining.”
The meet included several relay events that are not run during regular meets. Competing against mostly larger schools, Winona's best finish was sixth in the 4 by 800 relay. Runners were Sam Matriasciano, Noah Durham, Cedric Bibbs and Carson Holly.
Another team that did well was the sprint medley relay. Robert McMath and T.J. Forrest ran 200, Robert Cross 400 and Bibbs the 800. Bibbs, a senior, is running track for the first time this year.
Dadarion Small, who ran on the 4 by 100 and 4 by 200 teams, McMath and Cross are juniors who play football and are running track for the first time this year. “I tried to get them out for years and they finally came out,” McRae said.
Girls who ran well include Bailey Holly, Murry Catherine Alderman, Mikhiyah Crawford and Tanhya Knight.
Winona will host a junior high practice meet March 3 and a varsity practice meet March 5.
