MADISON – Out of 17 teams at the Madison Central Track Classic, Winona track teams finished fourth in boys competition and sixth for girls. It was Winona's first official meet of the season.
Coach Chris McRae was pleased with his teams' progress, but added “We still have a lot of questions to answer about who is going to do what. We have some moves to make trying to maximize points. This week, we are going to Ole Miss on Friday and hopefully we can answer some of those questions.”
Winona will be competing against teams from Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee at the Mississippi High School Invitational at the University of Mississippi. “It's a huge meet,” McRae said.
At Madison Central, the Winona boys finished with 47½ points trailing Pearl, 216, Madison Central, 99½, and North Pike, 50. Winona is a 3A school, while Pearl and Madison Central are 6A and North Pike is 5A.
The Lady Tigers had 50 points. Pearl won the meet with 178, followed by defending 3A state champion St. Andrew's 83, Madison Central’s 60, Cleveland Central’s 57 and Lafayette’s 52.
Tyra Weathersby and Krystle Hughes had strong performances for the Lady Tigers. Weathersby won the long jump (17-5), was second in the triple jump (35-7½), fifth in the 200 (27.20) and seventh in the 400 (1:07.02).
Hughes was second in the 200 (25.20), third in the 100 (12.49) and fourth in the 400 (1:03.05). She won the 100 and 200 at last year's 2A state meet and has added the 400 this year.
“Right now, what we are hoping for is confidence. The more she does it the more confidence she will have in it,” McRae said of the 400.
Aasjahla Garron placed third in the pole vault with a personal best of eight feet.
Ahmed Robinson led the boys team. He was third in the 200 (22.74), fourth in the 100 (11.40) and ran on the 400 and 800 relay teams that took third in those races. He was joined on both teams by Adavion Hargrove and Jaylyn Sanders. Andarious Coffey ran on the 400 team and Malcolm Gholston on the 800 team.
The 1600 relay team was eighth and the 3200 team seventh.
Also for the Tigers, Coffey was second in the triple jump (40-7¼). Isaac Leech placed third in the pole vault, clearing the bar with a personal best 12 feet. Carson Holly placed seventh in the 1600 (5:17.89) and eighth in the 800 (2:21.17). Sanders was seventh in the long jump (18-10), and Jalyn Phillips placed seventh in the discus (128-10).
