The Winona High School baseball team found itself down 1-0 going into the second game of its three-game Class 3A opening-round playoff series against Alcorn Central Monday.
The Tigers dropped an 8-1 decision to the Bears last Saturday in Glen with Game 2 between the two teams played in Winona Monday. A third game was played Monday night to determine who would move on to face the Independence-Choctaw County winner.
Alcorn Central, the third seed from Region 1, outhit Winona 6-1 and took advantage of eight walks and three hit batters issued by Tiger pitching.
Alcorn plated one run in the second, three in the fifth and four in the sixth. Winona scored one run in the sixth.
Conner Helms (5-4) took the loss as he went five-plus innings, allowing six runs (all earned) on four hits, walking seven and fanning four. Wyatt Boone finished the sixth inning, giving up two runs (both earned) on two hits, walking one.
Kam’ron Robinson had a single and scored the lone run, and Danarius Robinson had an RBI.
The Tigers closed out the regular season last week with games against Yazoo County and Vardaman High School.
Last Tuesday, the Tigers fell 19-18 to Region 3-3A foe Yazoo County as the Panthers tallied two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Winona held a 14-10 advantage at the plate but yielded 16 walks and committed four errors in the field.
Yazoo County scored eight runs in the second, seven in the fourth and two in the sixth. Winona plated three runs in the third, seven in the fourth, two in the fifth, six in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Gavin Vance started on the mound as he went 3 2/3 innings, allowing 14 runs (nine earned) on six hits, walking six and fanning two. Danarius Robinson relieved Vance and went 1 2/3 innings, yielding three runs (two earned) on two hits, walking seven and striking out three. Helms went the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up two runs (both earned) on two hits, walking three and striking out one.
Helms went 4-for-5 at the plate as he had three singles and a double, driving in four runs and scoring two. Danarius Robinson had a double and a home run, scoring four runs and driving in three, and Vance had three singles and two RBIs and scored three runs.
Kam’ron Robinson had two singles and a triple, scored three times and drove in two runs, and Miles Bailey had a double and two RBIs and scored a run. Chase Richardson had a double, scored three runs and drove in one run, and Hammond Austin had an RBI.
Winona played at Vardaman last Monday, dropping a 9-6 decision. The Rams scored one run in the third, five in the fourth and three in the sixth. Winona scored two in the third, three in the fourth and one in the seventh.
Kam’ron Robinson had a single and double, scoring two runs and driving in two. Vance and Danarius Robinson had a single each, and Richardson scored two runs.
Wyatt Boone started on the mound, going 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits, walking two and fanning three. Austin (0-1) took the loss as he recorded two outs, allowing two runs (both earned) on three hits, walking one and striking out one. Richardson worked two innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on three hits, walking four and fanning one.

The Lady Tigers were eliminated from the Class 3A fast-pitch softball playoffs as Booneville High School swept Winona 2-0 in their best-of-three first-round series.
Booneville defeated Winona 12-0 Saturday and 13-1 on Friday to end the Lady Tigers’ season at 12-13 overall. No information was available on Saturday’s game.
In Friday’s game, Booneville outhit Winona 10-2. The Lady Blue Devils scored one run in the first and fourth frames and 11 in the second. The Lady Tigers scored one run in the second.
Mary Beth Brannon had an RBI double, and Emily Casiday had a single. Dorothy Martin-Derrick scored the lone run.
Olivia Swindle took the loss in the circle as she went four innings, allowing all 13 runs on 10 hits, walking two and fanning one.
Winona played at Noxapater High School last Tuesday, falling 11-3. Noxapater scored two runs in the second, five in the third and four in the sixth. Winona plated three runs in the sixth.
Brannon had a triple and RBI, and Swindle had a double and scored a run. Hailey Burton had a single, RBI and scored one run, and Casiday had a single.
Swindle went 5 1/3 innings, allowing 11 runs on eight hits, walking six and fanning one.
Winona knocked off J.Z. George 21-1 last Monday, ending the Lady Jaguars’ season at 1-15 overall. Winona scored three runs in the first, four runs each in the second and third frames and 10 in the fourth.
Swindle had three singles, scored four runs and drove in two, and Martin-Derrick had two singles, scored four times and drove in two runs. Casiday had a single and double, one RBI and scored three runs, and Brannon had a double and RBI.
Oakley Chumney had a double, RBI and scored a run, and Lindsey Berryhill had a single and scored three runs. Alisha Taylor had a single and scored twice.
Berryhill got the win in the circle, allowing one run on three hits, striking out five and walking one.
