The Winona Christian School Lady Stars opened the 2025-26 basketball season earlier this week taking part in the Indianola Academy Invitational.
Coach Greg Watkins’ ladies opened Monday night with a 45-19 loss to North Delta School of Batesville and bounced back a night later with a 32-9 win over Deer Creek School.
“We played with a lot more energy against Deer Creek than we did against North Delta,” Watkins said. “The one thing that stood out was free throw shooting, and we missed too many easy shots.”
Against Deer Creek, the Lady Stars led 14-5 at halftime. Defensively, WCS shutout Deer Creek in the second and third quarters.
Senior Malaina Kuhn led WCS with a game-high 16 points. Classmate Allie Leach added six points and sophomore Mary-Hayden Blaylock scored five points. Junior Molly Lott finished with three points and junior Avery Harville added two points.
In the North Delta contest, Leach paced the scoring with six points. Junior Maggie Adams and Kuhn had three points apiece. Eighth-grader Gowan Cain, Lott and Greene all scored two points. Freshman Daylen Dew chipped in with a point.
The Lady Stars closed out the tournament Wednesday against Lee Academy of Clarksdale. Results were not available as of press time.
Winona Christian School will host North Delta School next Tuesday.
