With Christmas not very far away, the Winona Christian and Carroll Academy basketball teams gave their fans an early present last week.
The Winona Christian and Carroll girls needed two overtimes before the Lady Stars took a 31-29 win.
The boys game was just as entertaining as Winona Christian had to pull away in the fourth period to take a 49-45 win.
In other action last week, Carroll lost a pair of games to Winston Academy, falling 50-39 on the girls side and 38-37 on the boys side on Thursday.
Carroll will return to action after the Christmas break where they will play at Winston on Tuesday, Jan. 7 and then at Canton on Thursday, Jan. 9. They will finish the by hosting Benton on Friday, Jan. 10.
Winona Christian isn’t scheduled to return to play until Friday, Jan. 3 as they play at Indianola. They will then host Humphreys on Monday, Jan. 6 before playing at Oak Hill on Friday, Jan. 14.
Winona Christian boys 49, Carroll 45
The Stars rallied in the fourth period and took a four-point win over the Rebels on Friday.
Carroll led 10-9 at the end of the first and 22-20 at the half. After each team scored 15 points in the third period, Winona pulled away and outscored Carroll 14-8 in the fourth period to take the win.
Reed Thomas led Carroll with 17 points.
Winona Christian girls 31, Carroll 29
The Lady Stars needed two overtime periods to take a two-point win over the Rebels on Friday in district play.
Winona led 4-2 at the end of the first period while Carroll outscored the Lady Stars 8-4 in the second to lead 10-8 at the half. Winona took the third period 9-5 to retake the lead at 17-15. But Carroll took the fourth period 8-6 to send the game into overtime tied at 23-23. Each team scored three points in the first overtime period while Winona outscored Carroll 5-3 in the second overtime period to take the win.
Melania Kuhn led Winona Christian with nine points while Allie Leach and Hannah Grace Robertson each had seven points.
Olivia Whitworth had a big game for the Lady Stars with 10 points, 15 rebounds and six steals. Makenzie Reeves also had six points and eight rebounds.
Winston Academy girls 50, Carroll 39
The Lady Patriots build a double-digit lead in the first period and maintained that advantage to take an 11-point win over the Lady Rebels.
Winston jumped out to a 15-5 lead in first period and then outscored Carroll 15-12 in the second to lead 30-17 at the half. Carroll took the third period 13-11 while Winston outscored the Lady Rebels 11-9 in the fourth for the final margin.
Carlie Hoover led Carroll with 15 points while Nevaeh Wolfe had 10 points. Bailey Daves had seven points while Madelyn Singleton also pulled down six rebounds.
In the junior high game, Winston won 32-21 as Cole Beckwith had 11 points for Carroll.
Winston boys 38, Carroll 37
The Patriots started strong but needed some late heroics to take a one-point win over the Rebels.
Winston led 11-5 at the end of the first and 19-15 at the half. Carroll then outscored Winston 13-7 in the third to take the lead at 28-26 going to the fourth. But the Patriots outscored the Rebels 12-9 in the fourth to take the win.
Reed Thomas led Carroll with 13 points.
