The Town of Vaiden Board of Aldermen met for their monthly meeting on Monday, June 3. The meeting was short but productive. The meeting commenced with a prayer from Alderman Curtis Meeks, and the approval of the minutes from the May 6 meeting followed.
Mayor Stella Washington-Bell addressed the Vaiden Planning Committee about their upcoming event, the Summer Extravaganza. This event will take place in downtown Vaiden and will be held from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 29. The event will feature food vendors, a car show, live entertainment, and a firework show. All are invited to attend.
Board Attorney Tangala Hollis-Palmer then took the floor to discuss the 2 percent tourism tax that was voted on recently.
“It’s my understanding that it did not pass,” Attorney Hollis-Palmer said.
“Right,” Mayor Washington-Bell responded.
She informed the Board that she had spoken to Allison Bradshaw, the Staff Attorney for the Mississippi Senate, who had raised concerns that proper notice might not have been given. Attorney Hollis-Palmer then advised the Board that if they would like to put the 2 percent tax on the ballot again, there would be no waiting period. The Board then discussed holding a 'Town Hall' meeting where Senator Lydia Chassaniol would explain what the 2 percent tax is and how it would benefit the town.
“The 2 percent tax would definitely help the town and us moving forward to get some things done,” Mayor Washington-Bell said.
Attorney Hollis-Palmer will be in contact with Senator Chassaniol to set up a time for her to speak to the residents of Vaiden.
