A Tuesday night accident involving an SUV driven by a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy and a large tractor remains under investigation.
At approximately 8:45 p.m., first responders received an urgent call reporting a deadly collision on the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 82 near Hathcock Road in Winona. Upon arrival, rescue personnel discovered that the SUV had collided with the tractor on the main thoroughfare. The tractor driver, Arther Cleveland, was pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Coroner Allan Pratt. Officials later identified the deputy involved in the accident as Kelvin Lee.
The impact of the collision was significant. Deputy Lee's vehicle came to rest in the grassy median separating the highway’s eastbound and westbound lanes. The front end of the patrol car was severely crumpled. Meanwhile, the tractor was found overturned in the right-hand lane of the highway. The sight of the toppled tractor served as a grim marker of the accident’s severity.
Responding agencies included the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Winona Police Department, MedStat Emergency Medical Services, and the Winona Fire Department.
The collision's impact extended beyond the immediate tragedy, causing significant disruption to local traffic. Highway 82 East, a major roadway in the area, was completely shut down for over an hour. This closure not only delayed travelers, but also highlighted the seriousness of the accident and the extensive onsite investigation required.
This accident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers on roads and highways, especially when vehicles like tractors share the highway with regular traffic. It also highlights the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty, even during routine patrols.
