The Winona High School baseball team went 1-1 during its spring break trip to Florida.
The Tigers rebounded from a first-day
8-3 loss to Freeport High School last Monday to defeat Baker High School 10-9 last Tuesday.
In the win over Baker, Winona outhit the Gators 14-6 to overcome 10 errors in the field. The Tigers scored two runs in the first frame, four in the third, one in the sixth and three in the seventh. Baker plated two runs each in the first and third innings, one each in the fifth and seventh innings, and three run in the sixth.
Wyatt Boone (2-0) was the pitcher of record when the Tigers rallied from an 8-7 deficit in the top of the seventh inning to get the win on the mound. He gave up four runs (one earned) in one-plus innings on the mound, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Chase Richardson relieved Boone in the bottom of the seventh and got all three outs, walking one. Gavin Vance started on the hill, going two innings, yielding four runs (two earned) on two hits, walking four and fanning one. Danarius Robinson pitched three innings, giving up a single run on two hits, striking out eight and walking two.
Danarius Robinson had a banner day at the plate as he went 4-for-5 with two singles and two doubles, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Chance Richardson had a double and triple, scoring once and driving in two runs. Conner Helms had two singles and an RBI, and Hammond Austin had a single and double.
Kam’ron Robinson had a triple and scored two runs, and Chase Richardson had a single and scored twice. Tommarion Brown had an RBI single, and Aubrey Bailey had a single, RBI and scored a run.
In the contest against Freeport High School, the Tigers trailed 7-0 after three innings and could never recover. Freeport plated one run each in the first and sixth innings and three apiece in the second and third frames. Winona scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Helms (3-1) took the loss as he went five innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on four hits, walking four and striking out six. Chase Richardson worked one inning, allowing one run (earned) on two hits, walking one.
Danarius Robinson had a single and triple, drove in one run and scored once. Vance had an RBI single, and Chase Richardson had a single and scored a run. Helms and Bailey had a single each.
Winona, which hosted Noxapater Monday and played at Amanda Elzy Tuesday, visits J.Z. George Thursday.
Winona High Softball
The Lady Tigers’ fastpitch softball team squeezed in two games during spring break.
Winona beat J.Z. George 12-2 last Monday as it scored one run in the first frame, two runs each in the second and fifth innings, and seven in the fourth.
Mary Beth Brannon had a single and triple for the Lady Tigers, scoring two runs and driving in one. Makinley Russell had a triple, two RBIs and scored once, and Oakley Chumney had a double, RBI and scored a run. Dorothy Martin Derrick, Olivia Swindle and Alisha Taylor had a single and scored a run each. Emily Casiday and Lindsey Berryhill scored two runs each.
For the Lady Jags (1-6), Saralyn Roberts had a double, scored a run and drove in one run. Tysalyn Meeks, Trinity McCaskill and Kaylee Wilkinson had a single each.
The Lady Tigers (4-7) dropped a 9-5 decision to Vardaman High School last Thursday. Swindle had Derrick had singles each. Swindle also scored a run and drove in one run, and Derrick scored a run. Casiday had a single and scored once, and Taylor drove in two runs and scored once. Berryhill had an RBI single, and Hailey Burton drove in one run.
Winona, which played at Nanih Waiya Monday, hosts Ruleville Thursday and visits Ruleville Friday.
J.Z. George, which played host to Sebastopol High School Tuesday, goes to Sebastopol Thursday and visits Leake Central Friday.
