There is 'still' something magical about the summer holiday that brings back sweet memories from childhood. When the school bell rang the last of May, it signaled the end of homework, and the beginning of visiting relatives, a trip to the Gulf Coast and taking care of our horses! Mama was always ready to take me swimming in the afternoon. Few activities ever excited me as much as time at a pool or lake. There were no cell phones and video games. Summertime in Mississippi meant hours of free time and running like the day would go on forever. Of course, my sister and I helped mama! There were daily responsibilities and putting up vegetables. Daddy often came home for lunch proudly carrying a watermelon! Watermelon play was fun after filling up!
I remember the apple trees behind our house and mama's apple pies. She cooked most of our meals early in the day to avoid heating up the small kitchen. Now, I try to practice her cooking habits and prepare food early. Our meals in the summer were delicious vegetables, and the end of day meal was what you could find, usually soup. Fast forward, now our meals are often tomato sandwiches! A BLT is enjoyable too. Also, we used lots of mayonnaise, then and now!
Saturdays were special because mother made her trip to the grocery store, and I went to the theater to watch Roy Rogers, King of the Cowboys, one of the most famous Western stars of his era. He is best remembered for his signature song, "Happy Trails." He was also the only country singer to be inducted twice in the Country Music Hall of Fame and recipient of four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At the day's end, there were occasions when we ate at the City Cafe. I can still see Mr. Jenkins going from table to table. A nice person he was- always.
Memories of growing up will always be a special part of my life. Speaking of apple pies, I think our Sunday dinner will feature an apple pie.
