The Monday, Jan. 27, Carroll County Board of Supervisors meeting began with a prayer given by North Carrollton Mayor and Emergency Management Director Ken Strachan. It was noted at the beginning of the meeting that the meeting would be conducted by Vice President Claude Fluker as Board President Jim Neill was absent from the current meeting.
Following the invocation, Strachan introduced the first matter of business to the Board. Strachan explained that in a proclamation made by Governor Tate Reeves, Feb. 9 through 15 would be deemed Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week. In lieu of this, he explained that severe weather awareness workbooks would be distributed to students, including MEMA ABC’s of weather awareness coloring books. Following this, Strachan presented a document to the Board showing that Carroll County was awarded over $16,000 from an emergency performance grant. As his final matter before the Board, Strachan presented a certificate of completion for the FEMA emergency alerts class he had attended.
In other news, the Carroll County Regional Correctional Facility was a recurring topic of interest throughout the meeting. First, the Board approved a one year contract with Waste Pro for the CCRCF on a motion made by Beat 3 Supervisor Dill Tucker and seconded by Beat 5 Supervisor Randy Browning with all (present) in favor. Following this, the Board approved a contract between CCRCF and WMS Correctional Consulting LLC on a motion made by Supervisor Browning and seconded by Beat 2 Supervisor Josh Hurst with all in favor. In addition, the Board approved the purchase of equipment for the CCRCF. On a motion made by Supervisor Browning and seconded by Supervisor Hurst with all in favor, the Board approved to purchase a dishwasher for the facility from RestaurantSupply.com in the amount of $6,975.60. Finally, the Board approved to purchase one new 2024 Ford F150 for the facility from Kirk Auto in the amount of $48,796 on a motion made by Supervisor Browning and seconded by Supervisor Hurst with all in favor.
The final major matter of business to be discussed was regarding bids for the Carrollton Courthouse repair work funded by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History grant. The regular meeting was recessed to open sealed bids. During this meeting, the Board heard four bids from four different companies. Each of the companies bids included the base bid for general work on the courthouse in addition to two alternate bids, one added a fee for painting the exterior of the courthouse and one added a fee for installing surge protection in case of lightning strikes. Ultimately, no bids were accepted during the recess. The Board moved to take the bids under advisement and anticipates accepting their choice bid at the Monday, Feb. 3 meeting.
