After losing their first five district games, the Winona Christian baseball team was in desperate need of a win last week.
The Stars got exactly what they needed as they took two out of three from Oak Hill Academy. The Stars won 5-3 on Wednesday and then won 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday. The Stars dropped game 3 of the series 9-0.
The Stars improve to 6-8 on the season and will take a break from division play this week as they host J.Z. George on Monday and Columbus Christian on Thursday. They will finish the week on Friday by hosting Washington.
Winona Christian 5, Oak Hill 3
The Stars scored a pair of late runs and held on to take a two-run win over the Raiders on Wednesday.
The Stars scored two in the first and one in the second and led 3-0. But Oak Hill scored one in the third and two in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. But Winona scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the win.
The Stars had nine hits, led by Brannon Hill who was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and three home runs. Will Irwin was 2-for-4 and scored two runs while Karson McCaleb was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Kiker Carpenter also singled and scored while Hunter Land singled and drove in a run.
Hill started on the mound and pitched five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and seven walks while striking out six. Parker Watkins pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up one run on two hits and two walks while Austin Horne got the last out for the Stars.
Winona Christina 3, Oak Hill 2
The Stars used a two-run sixth inning to come from behind and take a one-run win over the Raiders on Friday.
Oak Hill scored single runs in the second and fifth while Winona scored one in the third and trailed 2-1 after five. Winona then scored two in the sixth on a two-run home run by Hunter Land to take the win.
Winona had four hits and overcame five errors and five walks to take the win. Parker Watkins was 2-for-3 while Will Irwin walked twice and stole two bases. Jace Osborn also singled for the Stars.
Austin Horne pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up two unearned runs on four hits and five walks while striking out five. Watkins pitched the last 1 2/3 innings and gave up one hit.
Oak Hill 9, Winona Christian 0
The Raiders took an early lead and cruised to a shutout win in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday.
Oak Hill scored two runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings and one in the fifth.
Winona had just two hits as Will Irwin doubled and Karson McCaleb also singled.
Hunter Land started on the mound and pitched two innings, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks while Cale Sproles pitched four innings and gave up five runs on five hits and two walks.
