The Winona boys’ basketball team split two games last week, a 60-26 victory over French Camp and an 81-51 loss to a strong Calhoun City team.
Jaiwan Small led three Tigers in double figures against French Camp with 15 points. Jalen Daniels and Kaleb Rush had 12 each.
Coach Presley Coleman was upbeat following the French Camp game. “Our rotation is finally starting to take place. Everything is starting to come into rhythm.”
The Tigers broke the game open in the second half after leading by 11 at the break. “We really turned it up in the second half.”
Calhoun City jumped out to a 25-13 lead after one quarter and won easily. “Calhoun City is one of the top team in 2A. A lot of people are picking then to win 2A this year. They're loaded,” Coleman said.
“We contested every shot. They just made the tough shots.” Calhoun City made 10 three-point shots. “That was the X-factor.”
The Winona girls overcame a six-point halftime deficit to edge French Camp 38-36. “We had a little pep talk at halftime, ironed out a few things and that got us going,” said Coach Frank Miller. “We had a little more pep in our step the second half.”
Daquariana Wallace scored 16 points for Winona and Tyra Weathersby had 12.
Winona played in the Oxford Charger Challenge Tuesday — the Tigers against Pillow and the Lady Tigers against West Union. Their next games will be Dec. 3 at Nanih Waiya.
