Winona had five runners – four boys and one girl – participate in its first cross country meet of the season, a 4K race at Madison Central. Because five runners are needed to compete as a team, the Tigers did not have a score for either team.
“I was very pleased,” Coach Chris McRae said. “Almost all of them ran the time we projected based upon their workouts.”
It was tough going on a muddy course in humid weather. “We battled some conditions.”
Carson Holly was Winona’s top boy, finishing 18th out of 160 runners with a time of 14:58.94. Sam Matriasciano was 79th in 17:02.46, Jarabelle Davis 117th in 19:10.85 and D’Marco Campbell 140th in 22:35.90.
Noah Durham, an eighth grader, finished 16th out of 122 runners in the 2K junior varsity race, leading Winona to a seventh place finish among 11 schools. McRae plans to move him up to the varsity to have enough runners to compete as a team.
Amya Phillips was Winona’s lone runner in the girls race. She was 112th in 31:09.09. Winona had two girls in the JV race who will run in varsity races, but McRae said he will not have enough runners to compete as a team.
The next meet is a 5K at Senatobia on Sept. 22 22.
