Winona girls basketball team rebounded from an opening game loss to Water Valley with victories over Nanih Waiya 30-28 and Coffeeville 51-42 last week.
The boys team is also 2-1 after a 56-44 win over Nanih Waiya and a 73-39 loss to Coffeeville.
“We made improvements from the first game, but we have to continue to improve every day and every week,” said girls coach Frank Miller. “We need to make better decisions. I think that will come with more experience.”
The Nanih Waiya game was close the whole way and went down to the wire. Nanih Waiya missed a potential game winning three pointer in the final seconds.
Daquariana Wallace had a game high 11 points for Winona. Latoria Ellis added eight.
Winona won the Coffeeville game at the line, making 27 of 50 shots. “They were just fouling us everywhere,” Miller said.
Tyra Weathersby led the Lady Tigers with 20 points, most coming at the line. Ellis had 11 points and Jasmine McMath 10.
Boys
Winona jumped out to a 19-7 lead against Nanih Waiya after one quarter and led by as many as 22 in the second half before Nanih Waiya came within eight in the final period.
“We got off to a fast start with our pressing defense,” said Coach Presley Coleman. “We forced some turnovers and got some easy baskets.” But he added, “We didn’t do as good a job as I wanted us to do finishing,”
Jalen Daniels led the Tigers with 22 points. Kaleb Rush had 11 points and Clifford Lee 10.
The Coffeeville game was just the opposite as the Tigers trailed 25-9 after one period and never got close. “Turnovers killed us. We had four turnovers before we ever attempted a shot,” Coleman said.
Daniels was high scorer for the Tigers with 12 points, the boys and girls played Choctaw County Tuesday and have games at Ray Brooks Thursday.
