Winona boys finished first and the girls were second at the Region 2-3A track meet hosted by Winona Monday.
The boys had 103 points, nine more than runner-up Water Valley. In the girls competition, Yazoo County had 131 points and Winona 99.
“I’m, proud of the boys for winning. It’s impressive what they have done,” said coach Chris McRae.
The Lady Tigers had six first place finishes, including four by Krystle Hughes, and the boys had four.
Hughes won the 100 in 12.17, the 200 (25.07), 400 (1:00.48) and the long jump 17-6. She broke her previous record of 25:80 and now holds the school’s record in the 200. The other girls winners were Tyra Weathersby in the triple jump with a leap of 34-11 and Aasjahla Garron in the pole vault at seven feet.
For the boys, Carson Holly won the 1600 (4:52), Cameron Bullard the 800 (2:15), Isaac Leech the pole vault (12-0) and Jalyn Phillips the discus (129-7).
The top four in each event qualified for the 3A North State meet to be held Saturday at Potts Camp.
Other Winona boys who qualified were Ahmad Robinson with third in the 200 and fourth in the 100, Andarious Coffey second in the long jump and second in the triple jump, Noah Durham second in the pole vault, Bullard third in the pole vault and the 400, 1600 and 320 relay teams, all with third place finishes.
Robinson was able to qualify in two events despite a leg injury suffered in the Division 3-3A meet a week earlier. “That was some of the most courageous running I’ve seen,” McRae said.
Qualifiers for the girls were Weathersby with second in the long jump and fourth in the 200, Jayla Campbell second in the 100 hurdles and Garron fourth in the triple jump. The 400, 800 and 3200 relay teams all finished fourth.
