The Winona boys and girls basketball teams both suffered one-point losses last week. The Tigers were defeated by Choctaw County 32-31 and the girls by Ray Brooks 41-40.
Winona took a 31-29 lead in the boys game when An'Darius Coffey made two free throws in the final 10 seconds. With Winona under the limit, the Tigers committed a foul with 1.7 seconds left, giving Choctaw County the ball out of bounds.
Zavier Coleman took an inbounds pass from Hunter Smith and sunk a three-pointer from the corner at the buzzer, turning a likely Winona win into a tough loss.
“The kid just made an incredible shot. It hurt,” said Winona coach Presley Coleman.
In his first game with the basketball team following the end of the football season, Coffey led the Tigers with 12 points. Coleman had 17 for Choctaw County.
The Lady Tigers had a seven-point lead against Ray Brooks midway through the fourth quarter, but let it slip away.
“We had some turnovers. They couldn't have come at a worse time,” said Coach Frank Miller. “Then they made a couple of shots and hit a couple of free throws. We're just making too many bad decisions.”
Tyra Weathersby scored 16 points for Winona and Latoria Ellis had 14.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers have road games at French Camp Thursday.
