The Winona boys basketball team defeated Humphreys County and lost to Coahoma Early College in region 3-3A games last week. The Lady Tigers rebounded from a loss to Humphreys County with a victory over Coahoma.
The boys used a pressing man-to-man defense to force some late turnovers in rallying from a 48-39 fourth quarter deficit for a 54-53 victory over Humphreys County. Kaleb Rush made the winning basket with nine seconds left, giving Winona its only lead of the game.
Jalen Daniels led the Tigers with 23 points on nine of 16 shooting. He also had seven rebounds and five assists. Cifford Lee had 11 points and Jaiwain Small pulled down nine rebounds, Coahoma stretched a four-point second quarter lead to 11 at the half and pulled away in the second half for an 88-56 victory. Daniels and Small had 14 points each for the Tigers, Lee 12 and Rush 11.
The Lady Tigers were defeated by Humphreys 58-24. “We played pretty well in the first quarter, but the second quarter was a total disaster,” said Coach Frank Miller. Winona trailed 43-14 at the break.
Tyra Weathersby scored 11 points for Winona.
The Coahoma game was a different story. The Lady Tigers took an 11-3 first quarter lead and led the rest of the way for a 35-29 victory. “We made a lot of clutch free throws down the stretch,” Miller said. ”We played better defense. The overall game was good by everybody.”
Weathersby had 17 points.
In 3-3A games, the Tigers and Lady Tigers played Amanda Elzy Tuesday and have a rematch against Coahoma Early College on the road Friday. Both Winona teams are 1-1 in the region.
The Tigers play East Webster at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mid-Mississippi Challenge hosted by Choctaw County in Ackerman. The Lady Tigers are not participating in the event.
