Winona senior Jon Reuben Chesteen has signed an academic scholarship with Mississippi Delta Community College, where he will play baseball.
“I felt like it's the best place for me where I’ll have an opportunity to play the most innings,” Chesteen said. “I like the coach (Dan Rives) and I like the college.”
Chesteen has been a two-sport athlete at Winona, also paying goalie on the soccer team, but he will only play baseball, his favorite sport, at Delta. “It's not like other sports,” he said. “Baseball is mostly mental. You can't just go out there and play.”
Chesteen is a pitcher and infielder for the Tigers and plans to do both at Delta. “They want me to come play third and pitch.”
He's not sure what he will do after Delta, but said, “Hopefully I'll be able to play baseball somewhere.”
Mark Austin, who coaches Chesteen in baseball and soccer, said, “He's grown up so much in the last year. He's improving every week. He works hard in the weight room and he's a leader.
Delta's main campus is at Moorhead in Sunflower County.
