The Winona boys won the 3A North State track meet hosted by Winona and the girls finished fourth.
Coach Chris McRae said a key for the boys was the performance of Ahmad Robinson, second in the 200 and fourth in the 100 while running with a hamstring injury suffered two weeks earlier.
“He's one of the gutsiest kids I have ever coached. A lot of heart,” McRae said.
The boys had three first place finishes. Cameron Bullard won the 800, Carson Holly the 1600 and Jalyn Phillips the discus.
The top four in each event qualified for the state meet Friday at Pearl High School.
Other boys who qualified were Isaac Leech with second in the pole vault, Andarious Coffey third in the long jump and the 400 and 1600 relay teams, both fourth. Coffey, Malcolm Gholston, and Adavion Hargrove ran on both relay teams. Jaylyn Sanders was on the 400 team and Jabraelle Davis the 1600 team.
Krystle Hughes and Tyra Weathersby had strong performances for the Winona girls. Hughes won the 100, 200 and 400 and was second in the long jump. Weathersby won the long jump and triple jump and was third in the 200.
Hughes broke one minute in the 400 for the first time with 59.91 and her time of 12.17 in the 100 equaled her personal best.
Other girls who qualified for the state meet are Jayla Campbell with third in the 100 hurdles and Aasjahla Garron, third in the pole vault.
Other boys who participated in the North State meet: Coffey, fifth in the triple jump; Bullard and Noah Durham, tied for fifth in the pole vault; and the 3200 relay team fifth.
Also participating in the girls meet were Garron with sixth in the triple jump, the 800 relay team fifth, 400 and 3200 relay teams, both seventh.
