The Winona boys basketball team began 2020 with a 56-51 victory over Ethel. The Lady Tigers were defeated by Ethel 26-17.
“It was back and forth the whole way,” said boys coach Presley Coleman. “We were kind of sluggish at the start. I think the two-week layoff, not playing any games, kind of affected us. Offensively, we did a good job executing and we played together. We got good shots.’’
“Defensively, we played well at times. We're still struggling on defensive rebounding. That's something we're going to have to improve on if we are going to be effective in district play.”
Jalen Daniels led Winona with 19 points. Clifford Lee had 14 and Jaiwain Small 10. Izik Stewart and Sacarrio Merritt each had 22 for Ethel.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers began 3-3A play Tuesday with games against Humphreys County and have home district games with Coahoma Early College Friday.

The Lady Tigers continue to struggle scoring. “We can't put the ball in the basket,” said coach Frank Miller, but he added, “We're playing hard and we're trying to get better.”
The game was close until the fourth quarter. “We hung in there most of the game,” Miller said. “We had several chances to cut it to two or three.”
Tyra Weathersby scored 14 points for Winona. Destiny Felton led Ethel with seven.
