The Winona boys and girls soccer teams concluded their season with losses to the Mississippi School for Math and Science. The boys finished winless with a 5-0 loss. The girls were beaten 7-0.
The Tigers showed improvement during the season, according to Coach Mark Austin. “I had a number of players who had never played before as starters. It's hard for them to compete against kids who basically have played their whole lives.”
In his first year playing the sport, junior goalie Jon Reuben Chesteen drew praise from the coach. “He saved a lot of goals.”
Austin also praised sophomore forward Cade Eldridge, who also played the sport for the first time. He took all the free kicks.
The Tigers lose only four seniors, including one who played sparingly due to a shoulder injury. “I feel pretty good about next year because I have a lot of young kids. I have seventh graders who are going to be really good for us,” Austin said.
The girls finished 6-7-1. Coach James Colbert said Kristen Robertson, Melissa Pacillo and Krystal Hughes played well.
“Those three could and did play where I needed them to be in order to benefit the team.”
