Senatobia swept the Winona basketball tournament last week, winning the boys and girls championships.
The Winona boys were runners-up with a victory over Eupora and a loss to Senatobia in the title game. The Winona girls lost twice in the tournament, but defeated Ray Brooks Friday night between tournament games Thursday and Saturday.
The Tigers defeated Eupora 75-40 in the opening round, but lost to Senatobia 61-47. Winona trailed Senatobia 42-35 through three quarters, but Senatobia pulled away by outscoring the Tigers 19-12 in the fourth quarter.
“We couldn't get stops at crucial times. That's what killed us,” said Coach Presley Coleman.
Kaleb Rush had 12 points and Jaiwain Small 10 for Winona.
The Tigers shot 55 percent (32 for 58) in the win over Eupora. Rush led four Tigers in double figures with 21 points. Clifford Lee had 12 points, Jalen Daniels and Dennis Turner 11 each. Daniels also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The Tigers were defeated by Ray Brooks 53-46. Rush scored 17 points and Daniels 16.
“It did us a lot of good to play a lot,” Coleman said. “I saw a lot of improvement in a lot of areas. I also saw some things we have to work on.”
“I'm pleased with our improvement offensively. We're looking a lot better running our offense than we were early in the season. We're defending well at times, but we are still having breakdowns on defense. That's something we will have to fix before we start division play.”
The girls team lost to Eupora 23-22, defeated Ray Brooks 31-25 and lost to Choctaw County 43-22.
Winona made a layup for Winona in the final seconds that would have giving the Lady Tigers a one-point lead over Eupora, but the basket was disallowed because of a traveling call.
“Over the weekend, we played pretty good ball,” said Coach Frank Miller, “We're getting better. We still have a ways to go, but we're better than we were three weeks ago.”
In the victory over Ray Brooks, Tyra Weathersby had 13 points and Janiya Tuner nine. Daqurianna Wallace scored 10 points against Choctaw County.
Senatobia girls won the tournament with a 60-18 victory over Eupora, improving the team's record to 10-1. The only loss was to Tupelo, a Class 6A school. Senatobia is the state's 11th ranked girls team, and top ranked in 3A, according to the website MaxPreps. Winona teams played Coffeeville Tuesday, have road games with Ethel Thursday and home games with French Camp Friday. The boys JV team will compete in the Oxford JV Shootout Saturday.
