An’Darius Coffey, Winona’s all-state quarterback, signed with Wednesday, the first day of the February signing period, as a defensive back with Duke University.
“I felt like it was the best decision for me,” he said.
Winona wide receiver Adavion Hargrove also signed Wednesday with Northeast Mississippi Community College.
Coffey played defensive back as a sophomore, helping the Tigers reach the 2A state championship game in 2017. He was credited with 34 tackles and four interceptions.
He moved to quarterback as a junior.
In two years, Coffey totaled 6,575 yards and 82 touchdowns running and passing. Winona was 21-5 in his two years as quarterback with the Region 5-3A championship in 2018 and second in 3-3A in the fall.
Duke Head Coach David Cutcliffe was the Ole Miss head coach from 1998 until 2004 with a 44-29 record including 4-1 in bowl games. He has been the Duke coach since 2008.
Coffey committed to Ole Miss last summer, but decommitted after Matt Luke was fired as head coach and did not sign with anyone during the December signing period.
Hargrove played wide receiver and running back for the Tiger. He had 25 receptions for 540 yards and three TDs, including a 99-yard pass from Coffey against Choctaw County, and carried 20 times for 218 yards.
