With four starters out on defense, Winona Christian School Coach Junior Graham saw what he wanted to see and that was some younger players play.
The Stars held a scrimmage on Friday night against North Delta and Canton.
“I thought we played well in spots and not so well in other spots,” Graham said. “I thought the effort was there for the most part until the fatigue factor set in. We got a little tired in the end against Canton. And that just shows that we need to get in better shape and that’s something we will work on.”
The jamboree was set to where each team played 15 minutes on defense and 15 minutes on offense.
“The good part is we were able to evaluate every kid on the team and that’s what we wanted to do,” Graham said. “Every kid got multiple reps on both sides of the football. We have a good starting point of what we need to address Monday at practice. We’ll get to work on those things.”
Graham said he did see some good things from the scrimmage.
“I thought our receivers blocked well,” Graham said. “I thought they did a good job of catching the football and did something with it once they got it. Up front, our offensive line did a really good job in the run game. We have got to get better up front and develop a better chemistry. It takes time to develop chemistry.”
Graham was also pleased with the way the defensive line played up front.
“We had so many starters out on defense that they were able to move the football on us,” Graham said. “I thought the defensive line did a good job of getting off the ball. I think we have a long way to go in the secondary, which I coach. We did have a starter out over there and will be better once those kids get back.”
The Stars will travel to Benton on Friday for a jamboree with Benton at 6 p.m. The high school will play a half and the junior high will play a half.
