Carroll Academy football coach Bo Milton got to see what he was looking for on Friday at Pillow Academy.
The Rebels debuted the I-formation against Deer Creek and Tunica Academy in a controlled scrimmage on Friday.
Milton said he was pleased with what he saw.
“I thought the effort was really good,” Milton said. “I thought our conditioning was good. We seemed to be in shape. And we didn’t make a lot of mistakes and the ones we make were correctable. I saw a lot of positives. The effort was really good that’s what we wanted to see.”
Milton was especially proud of his offense.
“I thought we were very physical,” Milton said. “We played really well against Deer Creek and did some things to set the tone. It started with the defense. They were physical and set the tone. Morgan (Mims) did what I thought he could do. He made a nice throw on a bootleg pass and I was pleased with how he handled himself.”
After manhandling Deer Creek, things were a little bit tougher against Tunica.
“Tunica was a good team,” Milton said. “They were 12-2 and returned their whole team. That was a good test for us and showed us some things that we need to improve on. I didn’t see any glaring issues. All of our kids got to play and the young kids played well on the defensive line. I think we found some kids that can play. I thought we got a lot of good things out of the scrimmage.”
Carroll will travel to Tri-County on Thursday for the final tune-up before the regular season begins. The Rebels will step up in class as they will take on Leake and East Rankin “It will be a game situation — lights, uniforms, referees — but it’s still practice,” Milton said. “We want to get the same thing we got out of the scrimmage. We want to see improvement on the things we need to improve on. Our focus is really on getting ready for Benton. We have talked all summer about getting ready for Benton.”
