JaTyler Moore has signed to continue playing football at Southwest Mississippi Community College after quarterbacking Winona to the MHSAA 2A championship game last fall.
“He was a really good player for us for three years,” Winona coach Joey Tompkins said. “He started for three years and got better each year.”
As a senior, Moore passed for 2,021 yards and 28 touchdowns and ran for 795 yards and 14 TDs, leading the Tigers to the Class 2A title game. In five playoff games, he totaled 1,054 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Winona defeated Newton, West Tallahatchie, Scott Central and Calhoun City in the playoffs before losing to Taylorsville in the championship game.
Lack of size did not hold Moore back during the high school career, but Tompkins said he will have to beef up to compete at the junior college level.
“He's barely 150 pounds,” Tompkins said. “To be successful there, he's going to have to gain some weight. He knows that.”
