The Winona girls basketball team won two games last week against Water Valley and Charleston, but the boys were beaten in both games.
The Lady Tigers defeated Water Valley 37-19 and Charleston 53-45.
Winona had a 12-point lead at the half against Water Valley and it was never close after intermission. Tyra Weatherby led the Lady Tigers with 16 points. Tatiana Womach and Tommesha Brown had eight each.
Winona fell behind Charleston 17-7, but rallied within a point at the half 21-20. The Lady Tigers led 33-31 after three quarters then added 21 points in the fourth quarter for the victory.
Creating turnover enabled Winona to take command in the second half, according to Coach Frank Miller. “We weren’t ready to play in the first half. But it was a good outcome.”
Brown scored 10 of her game high 20 points in the fourth quarter. Weathersby had 16 points, Womach 8 and MyCala Helms 7.
Tigers
The Tigers lost 40-38 to Water Valley and 72-56 against Charleston.
The Water Valley game was tied 38-38 until the Blue Devils made two free throws in the final seconds after a blocking call. “It was one of those 50-50 calls,” said Coach Presley Coleman.
Jalen Daniels had 23 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists for Winona. An’darius Coffey had 8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
“We played about as sloppy as you could draw it up,” Coleman said. “I think it was because of the layoff for Thanksgiving break. We came out flat and rusty.”
Rebounding woes hurt the Tigers against Charleston. “We’re struggling to rebound the basketball,” Presley said. “We had struggled against Water Valley and it was even more evident against Charleston.
“We’re doing a terrible job on defensive rebounding. We gave up second, third and fourth opportunities. That was the difference in the Charleston game.”
Daniels had another strong game with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Datterious Williams had nine points and eight rebounds.
The boys and girls were scheduled to play Kemper County Tuesday and will play three games in the school’s invitational tournament against Eupora Thursday, J.Z. George Friday, and Oxford Saturday.
