Leadoff batter Gracie Cordell had four hits and scored four runs, pacing a 15-hit attack by Winona in a 20-4 softball victory over Calhoun City, “We hit the ball really well up and down the lineup,” said coach Michael Cox. ”We made plays. We had a couple of mental errors early in the game, but other than that I was really pleased with the way we played. It was a good day. Something that we needed.”
Cordell had plenty of help with everyone in the lineup scoring at least one run. Madison Mills had two singles and a double, Allyn Claire Gant doubled and tripled, Olivia Swindle and Katy Kendall Ware each had a single and a double and Sara Winters doubled.
Swindle handled the pitching, allowing four hits. “She walked a couple in the first inning, then settled down and threw strikes the rest of the game,” Cox said.
The Lady Tigers will begin Region 5-3A play March 17 with a home game against Humphreys County.
Blake Cooper had Winona's only two hits in an 11-0 loss to unbeaten French Camp. It was the Tigers second loss to the Panthers this season.
The Tigers were set to play Pelahatchie Tuesday at the Winona Spring Break Tournament and begin 3-3A play with a home game next Tuesday against Amanda Elzy.
